Abstract

Purpose: This research was conducted to identify the major trends of research on social support in Korean Journal of Nursing from 2000 to 2011.

Methods: 119 papers sources, subjects, specific terms of social support, dependent variables, and research designs were analyzed from Korean Journal of Nursing.

Results: The major subjects of research were patients (19.32%). The most specific term of social support was social support (70.58%). The dependent variable of depression (17.64%), behavior and role(17.64%). For research design, non-experimental studies were most popular (90.75%), and the social support (89.07%) in independent variables was used the most.

Conclusions: This research suggests that experiment or intervention studies other than descriptive studies focusing on various subjects as chronically ill patients, the old ages, multi-cultural families, foreign workers, students and nurses and the research verifying mediation effect and moderating effect that affect health outcome is conducted in order to reduce depression and stress, and to enhance behavior, role, quality of life and adaptation in the future.
